Agreed. I want to have HTTP/HTTPS as an option on the login screen, and possibly as an option in System Preferences, though I'm not sure how that would actually work (once you're in the OS, you can't switch until you log out and back in again).

Yup, that's the problem. It's a setting for your account, but I don't know what your account is before you log in. The only way I can think of is to switch to HTTPS on login, which would require a quick reboot (crappy, but it's the only way).
